July is going to be a big month, not only for Google but for websites everywhere. Today, Google confirmed that as of July 15th, all websites not SSL secure will be clearly marked as ‘NOT SECURE.’
Google has been pushing this change for a number of years now and even pushed back the update to give webmasters more time to make the switch over.
What does this mean to you? Well to sum it up, if you’re not SSL secure, you’re screwed. Clients will be very aware that your site is not as safe as it could be, and likely very hesitant to submit forms, or perhaps even surf, if there is the possibility that their personal information is exposed. With big, beautiful ‘NOT SECURE’ displayed at the top of your website, you might as well close up shop.
If you’re a MediaTown client (you’re the best) relax, we have you covered. You’ve likely been running a secure site a for a few years. If you’re not our client, and your current ‘webmaster’ hasn’t informed you of this or has delivered you an insecure website, my God, let’s chat right now 😉
